Evolutionary Tracks of Betelgeuse

چکیده
We have constructed a series of quasi-hydrostatic evolutionary models for the M2 Iab supergiant Betelgeuse (α Orionis). Our models are constrained by the observed temperature, luminosity, surface composition and mass loss for this star, along with recent parallax measurements and high resolution imagery which directly determine its radius. The surface convective zone obtained in our model roughly accounts for observed variations in surface luminosity and the size of detected surface bright spots. In our models these result from upflowing convective material from regions of high temperature in the surface convective zone. We also account for the observed periodic variability as the result of the equation of state in a simple linear pulsation model. Based upon a best fit to all observed data we suggest a mass estimate of ≈ 21±2 M⊙.

Recent Observations of Betelgeuse and New Instrumentation at the ISI
The Infrared Spatial Interferometer (ISI) has been conducting mid-infrared observations of late-type stars for about 18 years. A long-term set of diameter measurements of Betelgeuse at 11.15 μm shows pronounced changes in the stellar size over time. These changes may arise from variations in the opacity of the environment immediately surrounding the star. New instrumentation is being developed ...
متن کاملThe Nonspherical Shape of Betelgeuse in the Mid-infrared
Three-telescope interferometric observations from the Infrared Spatial Interferometer (ISI) are reported at spatial frequencies that resolve the size and shape of the star Betelgeuse (a Ori) at a wavelength of 11.15 mm with a bandwidth of 0.18 cm . The data include closure phase measurements, the first such measurements of a stellar 1 disk in the mid-infrared. The data indicate a clear asymmetr...
متن کاملA New Vla–hipparcos Distance to Betelgeuse and Its Implications
The distance to the M supergiant Betelgeuse is poorly known, with the Hipparcos parallax having a significant uncertainty. For detailed numerical studies of M supergiant atmospheres and winds, accurate distances are a prerequisite to obtaining reliable estimates for many stellar parameters. New high spatial resolution, multiwavelength, NRAO3 Very Large Array (VLA) radio positions of Betelgeuse ...
متن کاملStellar Surface Imaging Using Closure Phase
We describe the use of interferometry to make images of features on the surfaces of cool stars. We describe observations of Betelgeuse (α Ori) and use this example to illustrate the requirements for astrophysical imaging with interferometers. We emphasise the importance of obtaining closure phase measurements and good Fourier plane coverage when imaging complex objects.
متن کاملRED SUPERGIANTS AS POTENTIAL TYPE IIn SUPERNOVA PROGENITORS: SPATIALLY RESOLVED 4.6 μm CO EMISSION AROUND VY CMa AND BETELGEUSE
We present high-resolution 4.6 μm CO spectra of the circumstellar environments of two red supergiants (RSGs) that are potential supernova (SN) progenitors: Betelgeuse and VY Canis Majoris. Around Betelgeuse, CO emission within ±3 (±12 km s) follows a mildly clumpy but otherwise spherical shell, smaller than its ∼55 shell in K i λ7699. In stark contrast, 4.6 μm CO emission around VY CMa is coinc...
